Hear a Story, Tell a Story

"I aspire to be a great man of God, an amazing husband and father, and above all an extraordinary professional engineer."

Christian Uwineza, a senior at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Christian Uwineza, a 25 year-old young man born and raised in Rwanda was

featured in “The Get to Know Me Show”.

Christian is a senior at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, majoring

in Integrated Sciences, with two minors in Mechanized System Management, and Leadership and Entrepreneurship.

As his name Implies, he is a firm Christian. He likes to start his day by gathering with others for prayer, then he gets breakfast and get ready for school.  Christian is smart when it comes to organizing his day as he always find time to do school work, and work-out during his free time.

Apart from school, Christian has always been a fan of basketball, so he plays basketball and watches basketball games as a hobby. Growing up, Christian had a dream of becoming a civil engineer

because he enjoyed seeing people construct beautiful things out of those skills.

Now, he doesn’t feel like his dream has changed much because he is focused on

mechanized systems which is not very far from engineering. Christian’s greatest

challenge in college was being able to choose what he wants to do from all the

available options. On the other side, the best days for him in college are when

school is canceled especially on snow days.

Christian aspires to be a great man of God, an amazing husband and father, and above all an extraordinary professional engineer. He believes that exploiting the available resources, taking care of his responsibilities, doing his best every day, and praying will help him reach his goals.

Remembering his vision is what motivates Christian to wake up every

morning and chase his dreams, and he advises those who are still in college students to start thinking and preparing their future, and figure out what they want to with their lives because if he was to go back he would have done it sooner.

Three words that describes Christian is humble, grateful, and optimistic. We hope we will continue to share with you his beautiful journey as he pursues his master’s degree next.

“Keep dreaming, you can be whatever you want to be, you can
own your dream” –Prossy advised.

Own Your Dream

Her name is Prossy Umutoni, born and raised in Rwanda. Prossy went to school in Rwanda, and later went to the United States to pursue her bachelor’s degree at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

IMG_2770.jpg

When Prossy was young, she had a dream of becoming a doctor which was mostly influenced by her childhood friends. As she grew up, her dream changed as she was exposed to different experiences, inspirations, classes, and life lessons. Through learning, Prossy developed a great passion for the food science department, and she wants to improve food quality in order to feed the overgrowing population of the world.

After graduation that took place on man 3rd, Prossy believed that she was going

To be independent; learn how to take care of her bills, get a job and build her future. She knows that she is going to be exposed to opportunities, but also challenges, and she is looking forward to

learning through it all.

IMG_5951.jpg

When asked who she aspires to be, Prosy said; “I don’t know”. She added; graduating from college doesn’t mean that you have an exact image of who you want to be and what you want to do. She believes she’s still in the learning process. She has a clue about what she wants to do because She is interested in the food processing industry, and she wants to contribute to the development of her country; Rwanda. “You don’t have to have everything figured out, you can keep dreaming as long as you keep learning and improving” Prossy advised all the college students. The best part of the college to Prossy was the wins, the lessons she learned, the experiences, and friends she made. She continued saying that she will miss those friends, Nebraskans, the school atmosphere, and the noise of huskers on Game day. Overall, Prossy had a great college experience, and we hope to feature you in the next chapter of her life.

She has met great people that she thinks she will take through out in life, and she is grateful to have built strong friendships with people that she may potentially even work  with in the future.

IMG_2333.jpg

“Coming to UNL in the first cohort, we were only seven,” she continued, “ It was small, you had to figure it out your own way, everyone is trying new things, but then the numbers built up, you knew you could rely on people; someone could do your hair, help with homework, and many more.” Blanche emphasized on the fact that It has never been limiting to have so many Rwandans here at UNL.

Everyone has a vision in their lives of how they want to be living their lives in the future. Blanche is no exception, in the next five years blanche’s vision is hope. She put it in these words; “I hope, I can only hope.” She continued; “ I think I will have a good job, i will work on projects am interested in, [and] that matter to me, and that I will be involved in decision making for crucial problems in my country and possibly east africa.” She added that she hopes that in five years she will not be limited to Rwanda, but to be more Regional.

Wrapping up, she summed up her college experience and shared with us that it was full of laughter, good frustrations, video calls with family and friends who live elsewhere in the world. But most Importantly was being able to make friends and form long lasting relationships.

The Get To Know Me Show

Season 2 Episode 1 with Shema Yahya

20191129-IMG_1285.JPG

We are so delighted to kick off season two with shema, a fun, unique family guy.

At some point in his life he wanted to become a soldier, and his “mom kicked that out of the away very fast”, then he wanted to play basketball, “and that also got out of my mind somehow,” he said. That is when he started to look into entrepreneurship, “I started to look at the world in the way of  how can i solve it [the problems in the world] and make a profit.” Shema said. In the future, he hopes to have a company that helps people and is profitable.

As an aspiring entrepreneur, he has been learning from other entrepreneurs and volunteering in various NGOs.

“My passions in life i would say is impacting the community. I am very big on community and finding ways to change the community for the better.” Shema shared.

Shema said that One Help One Direction Ihumure (OHODI) is one of the organisations he was blessed to be a part of, where he has actively been involved in the project called Future Leader Program, which specifically help children in distress. In other words mostly children on the streets.

Being part of this organization means so much to him, because after finding out that what they do aligns with what he would love doing in his career life, the passion grew deeper.

In his words he said, “... when I saw that, I felt like I want to be part of this movement. This is something Shema would love doing.”

Like any organization, OHODI face challenges like time management conflict, as the members like shema are all over the place in the world pursuing a degree, but they are pulling through to keep the organization alive and running.
